Alex,

Apparently, according to Mike Arkin (Activision), the problem of
static and sound breaking up on the AWE64 is actually due to a driver that is not up to date. This apparently happens with games which push a very high number of triangles.

A suggestion is to download the 3DFX reference driver which has eliminated the problem for most people.
You might want to refer to posts in the ATVI BZ board, though, before doing anything.

I'm also hoping iD and ATVI get along. I don't think that id will go off to G.O.D., given that various seedy developers are there. id knows it's the best and can command whatever price they want...they don't need the leverage of G.O.D.

I hope that QIII is distributed by ATVI. That would give ATVI at least another year or two for the Quake franchise. Then would come Trinity. That would add a couple of more.
