It's one thing to trust your word processing to Microsoft. It's entirely another thing to trust your mission-critical data to them.

JMHO.

No, Microsoft *says* they will be totally scalable. There's a difference in between what *will* happen and what Microsoft *says* will happen. They also said 7.0 would be out in 1997. Now it's March of 1998, and they *plan* to launch sometime in the 4th quarter. Next thing we know it'll be 1999.

A friend of mine lost his SQL Server 6.5 database because it got corrupted. He had diligently backed it up to tapes using Sony DDS3 I believe. When he went to reload from tapes, he discovered that SQL Server couldn't read the tapes! Turns out that there is a compatibility bug with some tape backup systems and Microsoft knowledgebase says they are "working on the issue". The recommended MSFT workaround for now is to back up the database to a hard drive, THEN transfer it to the tape. That's not going to do him much good now.

Corporate America can't afford to take chances on an inferior product. Oracle is the number one player in this field and that's not going to change any time soon.
