Sun will apparently be making announcements on many items at JavaOne.

The JDK problems are not as much OS problems as they are standardization problems. As you say, "...java will be unstable for a while...".

As a market, OSes are mature, and most of the developers have mature products. As a new product, JavaOS is not mature, though since the market itself is mature Sun does know the set of functions they need in the OS to satisfy developer needs.

Part of the problem is they are extending the product line and trying to differentiate products. Personal java leaves out many things from JavaOS, but adds others that JavaOS will add later on to maintain upward compatibility. See Sun's web site for a spec. Embedded Java will do more of the same I'm sure.

Regardless, once a single function embedded product is on the market, it is unlikely that changes in versions of the software will go into the product except to create a new model product. The problem arises more on classically programmable devices like net and desktop PCs, where the software is changing constantly.
