>>I think Sony is slowly phasing out their Zip built-in models<<

They may have changed their feature mix but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're phasing out zip. Most of the box makers featuring zip built-in seem to offer it as standard on some of their SKU's and optional on the rest if at all. Even Dell does not include zip as standard across all SKU's.

It seems as though Apple and Micron are the only ones who have adopted the "zip is the new standard period" theme. I think most box makers are testing the water with a few Zip SKU's while maintaining more competitively priced models to cover all price segments.

It may be that Sony is getting themselves ready for HiFD but they could also just be fine tuning their line based on sales experience.

Interesting comment in Apr PC World concerning Dell Dimension XPS D300 rated #1 best buy: "Another reason for the D300's continuing reign is its built-in Zip drive--an amenity that its 333-MHz sibling lacks."

BTW, what's with the name change?
