<<I do not yet see the advantages of 3d chips for amd. While it would carry higher asp it would also be more costly. There are also possible additional production problems that might appear. Pushing large number of k6 at 300+ might be more cost-effective for amd in a short run.>>

You are missing the point Albert. The 3D in K6 is needed to PROLONG the life of the K6. AMD must twist the CPU features to make exciting
for consumers as well as investors. Whether 3D is of any benefit is yet to be seen. If you noticed that Intel prolonged the life of the Pentium another 2+ years with the MMX. The MMX did create alot of excitement in the computer community. Its effect soon died down but alot of people did buy Pentium MMX. K6-3D on the other hand goes one step beyond the MMX. There are REAL 3D games written for the K6. If the games are really good then K6-3D will get good reviews. Good reviews will bring new buyers. This will breath life into the K6.

From what I heard K6-3D die size is only a tad larger than K6. K6-3D has only 500,000 more transistors than the already 8.8M transistors K6. Those 2 product use the same process. Thus if you fix the process then you are OK. I can guarantee you that AMD will kill the K6 as they migrate people to the K6-3D.

Albert, look what MMX did for Intel. It's all about marketing, and 3D is BIG, even if only a handful of computer users actually derive any benefit from it.

Albert:

news.com

You have always worried about how Cyrix get the most bang for the buck
on the X86 CPUs. Now you don't have to worry about that. AMD owns the sub $1000 computer market. I am jumping up and down in joy with this news. When AMD confirm that they have nailed their 0.25um process we'll be rich.

Don't even reply Stockman, Yousef, etc. Go fly your kites.

Albert , re. not see the advantage of K6-3d
Tom Pabst did , just going over my printout of his Comdex report in november to quote :-
" the K6-3D 300/100 was about 30% faster than a Pentium II-300 !!!!" (on 3D winbench 97)
"we could see how much higher the image quality of a game like this can be when the advanced features of the K6-3D can be used "
"this CPU will change the life expectancy of socket 7 considerably "
One other thing that you are overlooking also , the K6-3D appears to have been re-engineered to provide higher clock speed .
For example the K6 (.25) coming from SDC is only running at 233 and 266 so far , but the K6-3D demo'd in November at Comdex waa a 300mhz
version .
