If you consistently get 2Mb of throughput during the day to your local server then I'd
wager that your "network segment" (the one you share with everyone else) is a
significant performance bottleneck. There could be too much traffic or retransmissions
due to errors (that only show up under higher load conditions). To be sure try the file
transfer multiple times over different periods of the day so that you can reduce the
possibility that it's a server problem. Be sure to write down the performance figures each
time. A pattern should develop and you can then present the results to your ISP. They
may or may not be able/willing to do anything about it.

Steve,

I will do as you suggested. I never really tested my throughput from the ISP rather than other sites during these times. I do not access the ISP home page and files often since I know most of them by heart. The problem could lie within the local loop, the backbone, or the servers in other parts of the country.

I can tell you for certain that even if the problem is the local loop, no one will be willing to pay to solve the problem. The response will be that 2Mb is adequate<G> There is no competition here at this speed. There is only one cable company. The local phone company has not deployed DSL in mass. The rest are dial-ups with ISDN or the 56K connections.

I will let you know the results of throughput from the local server in a week or so.
