Y2K sucks up about 10% of the workforce. About 4% of that are people with good and current skills. The remaining 6% are large system (mainframe) type people who are trying to shore up the current systems. There is not enough time to replace all the code with new tech. and lang. That will come after. However, some companies have started to re-write systems but they won't finish in time and will probably roll mainframe code fixers onto some of those. What this all means is that Y2K projects will go on well into next century and continue to use bodies. Also, many of those bodies will be dinosaurs.

Add this to the fact that there has been a 42% drop in people seeking IS/IT degrees. Lots of reasons being kicked around as to why and one of the latest (and funniest) is that IT people have the image of being nerds and that is not attractive (one would like think that the Bill Gates and Larry Ellison's of the world are about as sexy as you can get. Can you say Billionaire).

So yes, there will be a shortage. My biggest concern is that nature abhors a vacuum. Society has a way of evening out the playing field when one group is making to much money. And yes, I think we make way to much money but I'm not going to stop anyone from paying me.

Although there will be a shortage, corporate America will be doing there best to put a stop to this. Hopefully, this industry has to high of a rate of obsoletion (sic) to give them time to stop and think before I retire.

Why do we use temp services and staffing agencies. BECAUSE IT COSTS ME NOTHING TO HAVE 20 DIFFERENT SERVICES SCOURING THE COUNTRY TRYING TO GET ME THE BEST RATE. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. It is a sellers market.
Ain't life grand...
