Jon,

I think perhaps you are looking at the wrong news release, there are several on that link. This is the one to which I believe George was referring. I don't see any reference to proprietary technology here.

>>>>Cross-Site Sweeps Promotes Browser

Four companies have joined to offer an Internet-based sweepstakes. The
sweepstakes, which is exclusively open to users of Microsoft Internet
Explorer, offers a five-day, four-night trip for four to anywhere in the continental United States as its prize.

All four participants--Intellicast Weather ttp://www.intellicast.com),
LookSmart (http://www.looksmart.com), TV Guide Entertainment (http://www.tvguide.com) and the WebChat Broadcasting System (
wbs.net)--have developed new web page content in conjunction with the sweepstakes.

The campaign, which is geared both toward introducing the sites and
Microsoft Internet Explorer to Web browsers, is open only to Microsoft
Internet Explorer-connected netizens. All potential users are offered
access the Microsoft Internet Explorer--which they can download--if they are not already users.

Each Web Site has developed advertising banners and buttons, which have been given prominence within the site. The campaign was developed in conjunction with Softbank Interactive Marketing, an interactive media sales company.<<<

Happy hunting,

Aleta

The operative reference is as follows. Yes, the date is 1997, not 1998. What Softbank did then, is viable today. Here's the paragraph in question. Nobody was trying to claim proprietary technology away from Infoseek.

Each Web Site has developed advertising banners and buttons, which have
been given prominence within the site. The campaign was developed in
conjunction with Softbank Interactive Marketing, an interactive media sales
company.
