Greg...my bet for mkt neutral play is as follows:

long IBM vs short CPQ

long Gateway (GTW) vs short DELL

these two trades will perform in the ensuing weeks...take a look at their valuations and near term prospects...the short DELL vs long CPQ may work in the long run because DELL has no enterprise computing..but CPQ is overvalued by more than DELL in the near term...

of course my opinion is to short the more desktop sales dependent box makers like DELL, GTW and CPQ and long the enterprise computing guys like IBM, SUNW, HWP, DGN, SQNT...I like the above mkt neutral trades within box makers and I like the PC hardware vs. enterprise computing firms

I also like the software in enterprise computing better than hardware makers in general...Y2000, EMU, driving software upgrades

just food for thought...

cheers

CPQ and IBM have the lowest PE in the same technology. If you do a comparision between CPQ, DELL, GTW, IBM, INTC, MSFT, AMD, etc. If CPQ earns $1.80 and you give it a PE of say 22 (still pretty conservative) you get approx $40.

If I go with this theory, I would have to say that CPQ is a bargain at these prices. Am I missing something? Any constructive argument would be appreciated.
