CPQ's ALPHA will compete with Merced in the long term.

For the low end CPUs, CPQ will use AMD as a leverage to negotiate with INTEL for
CPU price.
IF CPQ can take 30% of the PC market share, then it is time for CPQ to buy out AMD. At
that time CPQ will have Alpha in the high end and K? in the long end. So your investment on cpq is not just for a system manufacturer but a CPU company.

INTEL may buy out AMD sometime down the road, who knows .

RE: Intel buyout speculation and op. sys.
I haven't read the article, but I would think the op-sys is NT. Both the Alpha and the Merced (when it finally comes to market) run NT (the Alpha will run 5.0 first). Also, DEC was porting it's UNIX to the Merced.
More importantly IMHO, someone recently told me that 4.0 for workstations, let me put this delicately, is not the greatest. IMHO MSFT and CPQ (or Intel) should exploit the Alpha as much as possible to take up the (considerable?) slack that NT 4.0 leaves in it's wake.
