Motorola Advances Copper Technology 09:38 p.m Mar 15, 1998 Eastern PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 15, 1998--Motorola tonight announced that it has successfully completed testing of its first silicon wafers utilizing copper technology, an advancement that will lead to production later this year. This is in line with the company's promise to the marketplace last summer. Engineers at the company's Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS), based in Austin, TX, completed testing wafers, and prototypes in various applications are now underway. "This is a significant technological breakthrough for the semiconductor industry," noted Bertrand Cambou, senior vice president of the Networking, Computing and Systems Group of SPS. "Our PowerPC(TM) architecture has captured significant design-ins in all markets due to its high performance. We now expect that the additional benefits of production using copper will create breakthrough speeds over the long term for semiconductor applications." Motorola's achievement with successful copper testing will ultimately benefit a number of current customers of PowerPC chips who constitute a "who's who" list of technology powerhouses, including BayNetworks, Cisco, Lucent, Nortel, Ford Motor Company, 3COM, Siemens, Ericsson, Nokia, NEC and many others. Recently Microprocessor Report, the industry's premier newsletter, awarded the PowerPC 750 its "Editors Choice" award for the best RISC processor of the year for its outstanding performance in combination with a very small die size and low price. To date, Power PC has captured over 1000 design wins and the customer base continues to grow in all markets, especially Networking, Telecommunication, Consumer, Automotive and Industrial Controls. "We have been delighted to see just how pervasive Motorola's PowerPC has become throughout our product lines and markets. In computing, the PowerPC had a tremendous impact on Apple's recent launch of their new G3 series of computers, which was the most successful ever in that company's history," added Cambou.
