John: Like many others I watched minute by minute during the morning of October 28, 1997. I think that was the recovery day. By 11 am I was getting the impression that the trading was wrong. I posted to that effect at that time on the Kahuna thread. In my opinion, there was some type of intervention--either Divine or federal. However, like everyone else, I cannot prove which.

Fears of Deflation Rising in Japan

washingtonpost.com

<< Japan's economy shrank in the quarter that ended on Dec. 31, the government announced today, heightening fears of a deflationary spiral of lower wages, prices and profits that will make Japan powerless to pull East Asia at large out of its economic crisis.

U.S. officials have been watching the deepening economic turn-down with grave concern. We're "deeply worried that Japan's deflationary problems are gaining dangerous momentum" and will send the economy "spiraling rapidly downward," a U.S. official said. >>

More 'good news' ... probably good for another 100 points on the Dow. < G >
