Mike, I saw Sly's response to your post at Stockhouse, so I though I would cross-post it here: "It's Commercial products are still the key. ie. Tagalongs and Netnotions and hopefully Dr.Bean.

Hotnotions I understand was created for 2
purposes. Firstly, as a marketing tool
to allow people to use it online and
get a feel for the product. Hopefully,
liking it and deciding an off line or
intranet version would be useful in their
network.Hence purchasing NetNotions.
And secondly, as a revenue generator
for ad-revenue. Products like ICQ and
Hotmail have brought millions in value
to their company because of the value of
having so many users make use of their
product.
However, in the software industry a product
must go through Beta before it is
released commercially. So eventhough, they
are not generating direct income from Hotnotions
they still need to develop the product
the way all software products are developed
by going from Alpha to Beta to Commercial
release.
