"I believe the release of the latest Windows OS is playing a larger part in this PC slowdown than anyone is realizing and I am surprised it hasn't seen more discussion."

I think you are correct that the Windows 98 release date is a factor, but I don't know how big. I might hold back near-term orders pending checking out how Windows 98 worked on my current PCs and those I was planning to order. However, if Windows 98 is 10% faster, as some have stated, some of those orders may be delayed longer. But older PCs are usually becoming obsolete in more than one respect (CPU speed), so I see the long term effect as marginal in either case. Also, anyone who delays spending budget risks loosing it, so most will go ahead and order on schedule.

But I don't think Compaq's problem wasn't a drop in demand for PCs. I think it was a drop in demand for Compaq PCs because HP and IBM and others were dropping prices and Compaq didn't respond.

Nicholas...Win 98 sales have slowed PC sales to the extent that buyers are uncertain as to the increased processing power and memory requirements Win 98 will require of the machines on which it is installed. Probably not a huge factor IMO.

Nicholas

I can't answer for everyone else, but I am waiting for Windows 98 before I purchase a new system. I'm also waiting for Slot 2, AGP 2, & 100 mhz bus speeds. Oh, did I mention 450 mhz or mpeg2?

If I could dream, then Windows 2000 would be released as a new, non-backwards compatible ops system...

My interest in CPQ comes from the fact that I purchased my shares @ 28 just a few hours before they announced no profits this Q.

Long on CPQ and IOM (yes, the IOM hurts)
