Good morning gentlemen,

I visited Ames store in Hanover , MA on Sunday to do my inspection.
The parking lot was 3/4 full with many people coming out of the store with 2 shopping carts full of merchandise!! I also noticed the types of cars in the lot. Mostly what you would expect, however there were quite a few Cadilacs, BMW and Mercedes. That was a shock!

Lots of big plastic boxes , big toys, lawn furniture, bicycles, women with large bags of clothing. Very good display of strength. The store looked as good as I have seen any Ames to date. Stocked to the ceiling in every department. Good selection and of course good prices.

The 40% off sale was going strong. I spoke with 3 employees and tried to get a feeling for the trend of the business since the birthday bash. Everyone was very upbeat and positive though not effusive about the effects of the promotion.

The New York Times ran a big article on Sunday which highlighted Target Stores and the viability of the other discount retailers in their efforts to attract a more upscale clientele. It appears that many upscale shoppers are considering shopping in places like Target and even Ames for commodity items like household staples, kids clothes, socks, underwear, t shirts, etc.

Gary, any luck spending time this weekend looking at Ames books?? I am looking forward to hearing your comments.

Regards,

Barry
