have you compared dell's patent totals with CPQ/Tandem/DEC? that combo does more in a month than Dell has ever done. The real patent juggernaught is IBM (more than 150/month last year). The question is what leverage the patents give to the owner. Dell's model has been based on great execution and the ability to see deeply into the financial and business impact of their policies, not on R&D or technical innovation. I believe their future success will be based on those same qualities.
If you do a little research into who holds 70% of the patents on clustering, for example, including core patents that virtually everyone in the industry (including MSFT) has to take into account, the answer isn't Dell (Hint - it's not IBM either). IMHO Dell will not let themselves get distracted with R&D that does not translate to $ on the bottom line.
That said, Dell is a lot more than a box maker - They excell at business analysis and the ability to rapidly move the company to winning strategies. In that context their HW business is just the visible example of implementation of those skills.

3, I could only find (at uspto) 10 patents since Jan 1, including these 2 issued Mar 10:

1. 5,726,901 System for reporting computer energy consumption
2. 5,726,859 Circuit board component retainer and extractor

Where did you find 15?

But I did find 88 for Jan 1, 1997 to 3/10/98. All are assigned to Dell USA L.P.
