I am not much for fine details. I am not sure the HBR article will help me much.

Ingram makes BTO computer systems for their dealers. The Dealers/consultants almost constitute 50% of the market and sell to small businesses that require a lot of hand holding. In turn Ingram has deals with suppliers that offer very competetive prices and take most of the risks fo returns, price drops, upgrades.

It has been quite successful for them until now. I dont know how to compare them with DELL but they do have this niche.

Remember that there is a niche for all companies. How well they do in their niche is more impaortant than comparing them with some other niche market. Both Ingram and DELL could do very well in an increasing market or do poolry in declining prices. You would need to analyze their financials and do what if spread sheets and still be wrong depending on future performance.
