You don't have to pay self-employment tax if you don't show a profit on your Schedule C. Some CPA's appear to advocate transferring the Schedule D gains to the income box on Schedule C, and paying self-employment tax (see Tessers book). I don't think this is the preferred approach, but I'm not a CPA.
