In the 17th century it was thought to be a property of fire. Phlogiston was released upon burning of a substance and was the residue both the ash and the smoke. Later work showed that fire was an oxidation process and that the residues and byproducts were oxides. Still later this discovery was used to support the principle of the conservation of matter and energy and that these processes simply changed the state of matter/energy. Still later it was the foundation that the notion of perpetual motion was impossible.
