There is some movement on establishing a WDM layer that would be a sublayer of SONET. When optical switching is perfected (there are prototypes out there being tested right now) this would pave the way for an all optical LAN/WAN. This doesn't mean that the manufacturer of the switch would need to be a networker per se. An effective business strategy might be to sell everything right up to the LAN side of a LAN/WAN switch that could switch everything at once. Telecos also seem interested in storage networks that can be leased to clients. George D.
