Kim, you might be interested in this thread, Pluvia vs. Westergaard about one guy who had a bounty put on his head for negative posts he made on SI and AOL about a stock:
207.183.153.206

As long as you state your opinions are just that, opinions, then you should be fine. In other words, just add "IMO" ("in my opinion") after what you say if you are not sure how people will take it. Also, since the printed word has no inflections, add "(gg)" (two grins) after things you say that are meant in a good natured way, such as when trying to make a joke.

Of course, for obvious reasons, IMO, saying inflammatory things like "David Lawrence is a convicted felon, IMO" is still sleazy and should be avoided. Furthermore, in David's case, I can't find any evidence he was actually ever convicted (gg).

Kim,

One of the very early posters on SI ( I can't now find the post because my search thingy only goes back 120 days ) who posts under the Screen Name "Pulonius" had a great answer to your question...he said something like, 'to thine ownself, be true, and it follows as the night, the day that thou canst not be false to any poster' I try to find the post. But I think his membership has expired.
