I agree. The desktop is were the leak is in CPQ. Consumer reduced total cost and siginficantly increased its EVA. Desktop missed a product transition during the summer and has not figured out how to reduce cost fast enough. Winkler's group is under pressure.

The glut of inventory from CPQ, IBM and DEC, may cause some more problems. CPQ will close manufacturing for two weeks. Hopefully it will work on its BTO cause its systems are weak.

CPQ need to understand that the market is no longer market share and revenues, rather, a share of thre value chain of customers. But the average age of management is high and still holds on to short term measurements like quarterly ROE not EVA or customer relationships.
