This is a way of building virtual PC inventory (each PC can satisfy either a 200Mhz or a 166Mhz customer). This allows Compaq to operate with less real inventory to maintain order-to -delivery cycle time, or to reduce order-to-delivery cycle time at the expense of some to the reduction in inventory.< IMHO PC's are designed to support many configurations of CPU, Drives (floppy, CD, CDR, DVD, DVDR, Zip, tape, ect) Hard drives, and other stuff. (Stuff is a great technology term I learned last year.) Retail channel then plugs options into PC frame to suit the client. Lowers inventory while responding to multipurpose market demands. IMHO BTO is for commercial channel or direct net sales. Later, got to go home. NW
