Steve, Sometimes I just mumble...

- How AOL fits in?

IF (VERY BIG IF) we can get ADSL connections from local telcos at reasonable fees & AOL (w/ 12M members - more by now) offers ADSL connections, networking powerhouses would salivate (at least, I would) and see the benefit of Aware (i.e. control). Like it did to 3Com's x2 modems, AOL can dictate the acceptance of ADSL phone modems.

- Why would Aware "cease to exist"?
Why does Intel go on a shopping spree? Control, time to market, preemptive move, paranoia (Yup, this is me!)... But as a second thought, you are right - why should Intel get stuck with this 8Mbit/sec? Frankly, if you sat on a lot of cash and you were really paranoid... what would you have done? Wouldn't you buy AWRE - even just for the short term? And if you still have some extra cash, why not cover the communication other ends (FORE, CS, etc...). Let's stick with smaller purchases to avoid anti-trust issues.

Compared to Aware, yes, Intel is in the networking business.

About Pentium III/AMD/Cyrix... chip Real-estate will only get cheaper. Wouldn't you like more functions? Don't worry about the price. Intel has the volume and is paranoid enough. If Intel is hurt, which company (INTC/AMD/Cyrix-ed) still has tons of $$$ for R&D and a shopping spree or two?

BTW, back in '93, I told Intel, over a phone interview, how the 386/486 follow-ons should be designed to beat the IBM RS/6K - add sound/graphic (multimedia!), RISC & communication instructions. Well, didn't get the job but things seem to play out as predicted. Thanks, partially, to HP and, now, DEC. And yes, I do have an idea of what the future (say yr 2002-5) CPUs would offer! This time, talking over the video/phone with Intel won't happen.

Wow, I really mumbled! Good luck.
