Hello Perry,
Re: monitors..I'll just bet that if you call DELL @ 1-800424-1372 someone will answer your query.

I called DELL ware today and ordered a memory upgrade and keyboard. The prices were great and expect delivery on Wed.

I had a very short wait on hold and sales person was very helpful.
Good luck
Judith

Perry, On the Inspiron 3000 with the 13.3" screen (XGA) you can get better video resolution and more colors than with the 12.1" screen (SVGA). The on-line manual says:

NOTE: For the sharpest image on a SVGA display, Dell recommends that you always use a video resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. For an XGA display, use a video resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels.

Get the better screen and you'll barely feel a need/desire to attach a 17" monitor. Or, if you have a 17" monitor on a desktop, you're already spoiled and you don't have a choice.

B

Perry,

Until two weeks ago i was using a Latitude XPi166 with a 12.1" SVGA display. It's top native resolution was 800x600. It could support 1024x768 resolution but only in "pan mode" meaning that you don't get to see the entire screen shots...only about 3/4 of it. You would have to scroll up and down and left and right to see the entire screen. It would however support full 1024x768 on an external monitor.

I am now using a new Latitude CP with XGA resolution and i get full 1024x768 resolution on its 13.3" display AND on an external monitor. And let me tell you, the colors are fantastic!!!!!! What a beautiful piece of work. Great product.
