Intel Investors - IBM, Apple and 400 MHz Copper PowerPCs.

Apple and IBM are set to "Demonstrate" a 0.25 micron 400 MHz PowerPC CPU utilizing IBM's new Copper interconnect technology.

IBM gave a technology paper at the recent ISSCC where they described their 0.25 micron PowerPC chip using this new copper technology. The chip ran at speeds up to 480 MHz.

What the media, technology and financial analysts have failed to point out is that Intel gave a paper at the same ISSCC describing the 0.25 micron Deschutes which ran at 450 MHz WITHOUT THE USE COPPER INTERCONNECT Technology!

Further, Intel will introduce and begin selling (Actually, Intel has been shipping these already) 350 and 400 MHz versions of these same parts on April 15. Intel has committed to shipping the 450 MHz Deschutes by the end of this year.

The simple, obvious point is that IBM has had to resort to a very complex and risky new copper technology JUST TO MAINTAIN PARITY with Intel's aluminum based 0.25 micron process technology.

It would not be too far off the mark to say that Intel has caught up and surpassed IBM in process technology performance. As Intel continues its process development efforts, it should maintain this advantage. Implementation of their 0.18 micron process should proceed much more smoothly without having to worry about copper and its inherent process difficulties. This 0,18 micron process should be starting production in early to mid 1999 - about one year from now.

If and when copper technology is added to Intel's process modules, they should receive another BOOST in performance, one that IBM has already received just to reach 480 MHz, a speed that Intel has nearly achieved with the standard aluminum interconnect technology.
