Borland's VisiBroker ORB Surpasses 30 Million
Licenses Deployed Worldwide

Industry Partnerships Have Made VisiBroker The Leading Deployed
ORB Technology

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Borland International, Inc.
(Nasdaq: BORL - news) today announced that deployed licenses for its VisiBroker ORB
surpassed 30 million in 1997, making VisiBroker the most widely distributed and adopted
ORB worldwide. Industry partnerships with Oracle, Hitachi, Novell, Netscape, Informix,
Silicon Graphics and others have played a key role in making VisiBroker the leading
deployed ORB technology. Borland's partners are using VisiBroker for Java and VisiBroker
for C++ to provide support for CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture)
and CORBA's Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP) in their product lines. With the recent
acquisition of Visigenic Software, today's announcement reinforces Borland's commitment to
the success of the VisiBroker product line and the importance of CORBA technology to the
computer industry.

''Through its widespread industry partnerships and growing corporate adoptions, VisiBroker
has emerged as the leading CORBA technology for the computer industry, and Borland's
objective is to continue its rapid growth as an industry standard,'' said Zack Urlocker, vice
president of marketing for Borland.

''Borland is proud to announce that the VisiBroker ORB has now been deployed on more
than 30 million computers,'' stated Randy Hietter, director of product marketing at Borland.
''By forming strategic alliances with today's industry leaders, we have established Borland's
technology as the de facto standard and have moved way ahead of the competition.''

Karen Boucher of the Standish Group stated, ''Borland's VisiBroker ORB has been
adopted by a significant number of partners in a variety of technology sectors. This strong
partnering has propelled VisiBroker into the forefront of the CORBA marketplace. The
Standish Group believes this continued proliferation of third party use of the VisiBroker
technology will provide the company with a leading middleware market position.''

Some of the highest profile computer software and hardware companies have turned to
Borland to enable the development of robust applications distributed across the Web.
''Borland's vision for its widely-accepted VisiBroker technology is the corresponding
strategy for network computing,'' said Alvin Tedjamulia, Novell's vice president of
engineering. ''Our decision to integrate Borland's ORB, along with similar moves from
companies like Oracle and Netscape, provides developers with truly open tools that are
platform and language independent for building distributed applications on their networks.''

Oracle Corporation [Nasdaq:ORCL - news] uses VisiBroker for Java ORB
technology to provide developers with a rich development environment for client
communication within the Network Computing Architecture (NCA).
Silicon Graphics is integrating VisiBroker for Java and VisiBroker for C++ ORB
technology into IRIX(TM), the Silicon Graphics(R) multi-threaded UNIX(R)
system-based 64-bit operating environment. SGI is the first major hardware
manufacturer to provide integrated operating system support for IIOP and CORBA.
VisiBroker for Java is embedded into Netscape Communicator client software,
allowing Java applets to interoperate with object servers. Both VisiBroker for Java
and VisiBroker for C++ have been embedded in Netscape Enterprise Server 3.0, the
cornerstone of Netscape SuiteSpot, Netscape's integrated suite of server software.
Other major VisiBroker licensees include: Novera, Business Objects
[Nasdaq:BOBJY - news], Bluestone, Cincom, Gemstone, Actra (acquired by
Netscape in November, 1997), BBN Technologies, Trilogy, Hummingbird and
Scopus.

David:

I have not looked into earnings calc. this quarter mainly because of the games that will take place with the one time charge due to VSGN.

I'll be watching those enterprise deals. I expect and suspect that BORL is executing well here and I think we'll all be pleasantly surprised.

As for "guessing" earnings I'm going for my old standby - 75c! Some year into the next millenium I expect this number to be right.

Do you know if what Zack's and First Call are saying is right? First Call's system seems to be totally messed up because of the FY change, Zack's shows 0.05 and I suspect this is excluding the 1 time charge but again I do not know what is right. If I had to hope I would be looking for a continuation of the beat the estimate trend. Del is no fool and it is in everyone's interest for BORL to continue to massage the numbers if need be to continue beating the street estimates. It gives everyone that warm fuzzy feeling.

Finally the reason I suspect that revenues will be nice is that I suspect the big clients are getting very comfortable with BORL's long term viability. Small deals become medium deals become large deals become very large deals. Right now we are in the small stage and heading for the medium stage.

Shane.
