Morten In the U.S. phone access is provided by the regional bell operating companies and a few independents. There is basically only one company in each region which the states regulate in setting prices. Phone users pay a monthly fee of approximately $12 to $25 per month for service. That includes local "free" calling but not long distance. The distance factor is set by state regulatory boards. Example if I talk to my neighbor 10 seconds or 20 hours the charge is the same...0!
