March 17, 1998 (HONG KONG) -- Intel Corp. and Hong Kong-based Pacific Century Group have formed a new company to explore business opportunities for providing interactive digital services in the Asia-Pacific region. The new company, called Pacific Convergence Corp. (PCC), will deliver broadband data services to customers in the region using an integrated system of advanced telecommunications networks and related technologies. Total investment in the company as well as ownership details were not disclosed. William Howe, vice president of Intel's Consumer Products Group, said the formation of the venture represents the most recent step in Intel's strategy to deliver high-speed broadband services to users of personal computers and other digital devices in homes and businesses worldwide. Intel said it brings to PCC its expertise in the areas of PC platforms and silicon technology as well as its experience from many investments in broadband communications technologies. George Chan, executive vice president of Pacific Century Group, said that interactive digital services would enrich the region in such areas as education, information and entertainment. Pacific Century Group is a private company owned by Richard Li, son of Hong Kong billionaire Li Kar Shing, and the company's senior management. Its primary businesses are digital media development, financial services, infrastructure and property. The group also invests in various Asia-Pacific markets.
