I think I know who's doing the DSL and I suspect they're working with CPQ in the process.

Not a public company, so we don't have to bang on the cyber doors trying to find out.

My enthusiasm isn't what it once was either, but I have a feeling it'll pick up as soon as the telcos get on the band wagon.

Later --

Pat

Manitoba Telecom Services Partners With Pulsecom to Launch First Commercial DMT-Based ADSL Service

Business Wire - March 17, 1998 08:25

HERNDON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 17, 1998--Manitoba Telecom Services (MTS), a full-service telecommunications company based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and Pulsecom, a leading supplier of communications access solutions, Tuesday announced that MTS has launched the first commercially available ADSL service based on the ANSI T1.413 Discrete Multi-Tone (DMT) standard.

To deliver its new MTS ADSL Line Enhancement Service, MTS is using Pulsecom's WavePacer Broadband DSL Solution, a scalable, end-to-end ADSL system that addresses the needs of end users, network access providers (NAPs) and network service providers (NSPs).

Unlike other ADSL services that have been in the trial stages, the MTS service is standards-compliant and commercially available now to consumers and businesses in Winnipeg, with plans to roll out the service to other areas in the province in the near future. The new service is the first networkwide, tariffed ADSL service based on the DMT standard.

The MTS ADSL Line Enhancement Service will be targeted primarily to users who require high-speed access to the Internet and to corporate LANs. In particular, the MTS service will address the rapid growth in telecommuting that has occurred in Manitoba over the past year. The key benefit for users of the service will be increased speed without the need to modify any of their existing desktop or LAN systems.

As an example, users can expect accelerated Internet downloads up to 50 times faster than conventional 28.8 Kbps modems, allowing some 50 pages of text to be downloaded in less than one second. The service will be available to users through a variety of Internet service providers (ISPs), four of which have already signed on to offer the service in the Winnipeg area.

MTS is using Pulsecom's WavePacer Broadband DSL Solution, a highly scalable, easy-to-implement ADSL system, as an integral component of its ADSL network, interconnecting with MTS's high-speed, broadband ATM switching system. MTS selected the WavePacer Broadband DSL Solution for a number of reasons:

-- The unique user-initiated service selection feature which will enable a subscriber to select dynamically among multiple service destinations including corporate LANs. This Web-based feature requires no new user software and eliminates the need for MTS to provision each new connection. This will be particularly useful for MTS in addressing the telecommuting market, wherein users want to dial up multiple locations such as their Internet service provider and their corporate LAN.

-- Use of existing protocols, hardware, software and wide-area network (WAN) access methodologies. Specifically, the WavePacer Broadband DSL Solution allows MTS to carry multiple point-to-point protocol (PPP) sessions, which greatly eases the administrative burden for ISPs and corporate clients by reducing the number of permanent virtual circuits (PVCs) they must manage.

-- Availability of a standard DMT-based solution upgradable to the emerging splitterless ADSL standard proposed by UAWG and ITU.

-- An architecture that requires no new software or other modifications to subscribers' PC or LAN systems and minimal upgrade to ISPs' environments.

"The Pulsecom WavePacer Broadband DSL Solution gave us the tools we needed to begin rolling out a commercial ADSL service immediately," said Bill Baines, MTS president and COO.

"Significant features of Pulsecom's solution are its provisioning and management scalability, support for multiple xDSL technologies and architectures to meet our customers' ongoing needs, the availability of a centralized network management system, and network-enabled software upgrades. These features of the WavePacer Broadband DSL Solution will help ensure that MTS maintains a significant edge in the market even after other providers launch competitive ADSL services," he explained.

"MTS is an excellent example of how a service provider can utilize Pulsecom's WavePacer Broadband DSL Solution to roll out quickly new, high-speed services in this increasingly competitive marketplace," said Fred Glave, vice president and general manager at Pulsecom.

"MTS has launched what we believe is the first commercial ADSL service based on industry-standard, DMT technology. This has enhanced significantly MTS's competitive position and furthers the acceptance of DMT as the preferred technology for delivering a new generation of communications services."
