Possible similarity to early-August '97 on charts for DELL. Not momentum and stock price at that time vs. now. Larger move, but similar, nonetheless. Note too, that this period was also post-split. If this is consolidation, we're soon to head upward...

Mohan

On the other hand DELL should have been trading at
Gateway's P/E which I think is quite reasonable. If this happens DELL should be
trading around $75.00

Perhaps the market knows something we dont. I for one believe that there are more reasons why a stock is at any price at any given moment in time than all the analysis we can come up with. For the long term we need to set an expected price of the stock based on its own analysis rather than as a comparison to another stock.

Its quite possible that instead of DELL rising to sell at GTW p/e GTW may fall to sell at DELL p/e or even both p/e's may drop.

Mohan, I believe that the GTW P/E is an anomaly resulting from their Q3 loss - 68›- which produced a total f97 eps of 70›. If you compare the trailing 1997 P/E [57] versus forward 1998 P/E [18] you'll see the dramatic difference. The only reason that we see the high trailing P/E at this point in time is due to GTW's remarkable turnaround in Q4 [59› eps].

3com's p/e is over 60, do you think dell should trade over 60, there are not so good companies tradeing over p/e 100. do you think dell should be trading with a p/e of 100?

P/E only makes sense to companies with steady earnings, if they have one or two really bad quarters, you can't use p/e. The same with some internet stocks, they are not even makeing any money.

I don't know what makes you to buy dell if you can't figure this out.
