Congo
ACP reported on March 16 that the Washington-based Corporate Council on Africa, the CCA, has sent a trade mission to the Congo as planned. It arrived in Kinshasa on March 14. The mission is led by Mr. David Miller, the CCA's executive director. The mission is to meet with various officials from March 17 through 20. The delegation from the United States reportedly includes some 40 representatives of some of America's leading corporations. They will meet in Kinshasa with representatives of the Congolese president, the Federation of Enterprises of Congo, and the Association of the Young Entrepreneurs and then will travel on March 18 to Lubumbashi. The delegation will depart on March 21"
Human rights
"William Wallis reported for Reuters on March 15 that the Government of the Congo, in concert with the UN, has mapped out a National Plan for the Defense of Human Rights following three days of meetings in Kinshasa between foreign ministry and UN human rights commission people. Wallis reported that some UN officials have termed this action a major breakthrough in the relationship between the UN human rights organization and DRC government officials. Wallis reported that numerous high level Congolese government officials participated in the three day session. Wallis said that the government will take a hard look at forming an inter-ministerial committee to ensure respect for human rights and to monitor related international undertakings. ACP reported on March 16 that Congolese Foreign Minister Karaha has publicly committed his government to promote human rights and include that as part of the overall national reconstruction effort. Interestingly, PANA reported on March 15 that The New York-based Human Rights Watch Africa has suggested that the powers of the International Tribunal in Arusha, Tanzania, currently trying suspected perpetrators of the 1994 massacres in Rwanda, be extended to cover those who committed similar atrocities in the DRC."
