AT&T, Motorola Tie for Distinction as Most Widely Followed U.S. Company, According to Nelson Top 25 Research Ranking 12:18 p.m. Mar 17, 1998 Eastern
PORT CHESTER, N.Y., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T (NYSE: T) and Motorola (NYSE: MOT) tied for first place as the most widely followed U.S. corporations in 1997, according to the latest rankings from Nelson Information, Inc.
Each company is followed by analysts at 62 sell-side firms, according to Nelson. This marks the third year in a row that AT&T ranked as the most widely followed U.S. company, while Motorola jumped from fourth place the previous year and 13th place in 1995.
Intel, which ranked firm in terms of number of research firms in the Nelson database that cover the company, was the most actively followed company during 1997. Analysts from 58 sell-side firms produced 246 research reports on Intel during the year, more reports than for any other U.S. company.
The Nelson rankings are based on information contained in the new 1998 edition of Nelson's Directory of Investment Research, which features data from 775 brokerage firms with more than 10,000 analysts. Nelson also ranks the most widely followed foreign companies and foreign companies with U.S.-traded shares in the form of American Depository Receipts (ADRs).
The most widely followed foreign firms in 1997, and the number of brokerages covering them, were:

-- Northern Telecom, 45
-- Glaxo Wellcome, 44
-- SmithKline Beecham, 43
The only change in this top five from the previous year was that Northern Telecom moved up to third from fourth, pushing past Glaxo Wellcome.
The most widely followed ADRs in 1997, and the number of brokerages covering them, were:
