Answer. Ordering your stock certificates in name form can be done at any time. You can request a Transfer & Deliver at the time of purchase or any time after that.

Many brokerage firms don't want you to take your street name shares and convert them into NAME for a few reasons. One being that you can sell your stock with any brokerage firm, and they fear they will lose a commission from that later sale. Second, brokerage firms hate paperwork, and it also places you in direct control of your stock!

There may be a small charge per certificate ordered from your brokerage firm. DLJ Direct charges $15 per certificate (not share). So if you a one certificate of AWLT for 100 shares or even 250,000 shares ordered, then it will cost you $15 for the certificate. This process takes 2 to 5 weeks to complete. You can break up the certificate amounts in any fashion you wish.

Years ago owning your stocks in certificate form was the norm, now it a rare thing to do.

If you plan on holding AWLT a long time, then ordering certificates is the way to go. I dries up the public float and places less shares out there for the few brokerage firms that DO use your stocks to short with and also stops the blatant naked selling of shares by the Market Makers.

When you want to sell your shares you simply sell stock not in position, and then deliver the certificate(s) to the brokerage firm within the T+3 time frame.
