True, but betting your whole future on this as apposed to building a real decoder is very courageous: it sounds much more like a rationalization (peformance shortfall) than anything else.

Full 720p or 1080i decode then scale to 480i looks better, and won't cost all that much more soon enough, especially by the time HDTV broadcasts are real.

There have also been many many surveys lately stating that
the average consumer is far more willing to spend $150 on
a converter than $2K-$3K on a display that will actually
show HD.


Why not buy a box that does full 720p/1080i and converts the HDTV decoded pictures to interlace monitor with all them fancy anti-flicker polyphase filters.

It seems that everyone including Teralogic, Panasonic, etc.
recognizes that "downconversion decoding" is an important
capability (at least during the SD-to-HD transition period).
