I always get asked - "Why don't you put that cover back on that computer - it looks so ugly". Well, my response has been "I don't know" and "Sometimes I need to get inside there". I can now add "Sometimes someone asks me a question about what kind of uP socket is in there". My 486 has a Socket 3, I don't remember where I've seen the socket 5, perhaps it doesn't exist or was a variation for 486 or an early Pentium socket. Socket 7 is for Pentiums and Socket 8 is for Pentium Pros with the cache chip and uP mounted separately on the same carrier, making it an oblong socket.
