I think every investor has to ask whether they believe that this is a company specific problem or a widespread technology slowdown. With INTC, CPQ, MU, and BAY I think that this is pretty clear that the whole technology sector is slowing. Therefore, it is possible that the shipment rates for OEM's is even just overall unit shipments lower.

If this is so then the heavy promotions with Best Buy will help offset slow OEM sales. (Something the Disk Drive companies can't do.) Increasing sales are what higher advertising expenditures are supposed to do. IOM recognized this in January and started the advertising program. CPQ did not recognize the upcoming slower saes and didn't warn till start of March and a promo program is now in place what march 16th.

IOM had $196 million in cash on hand on 12/31/97. This is a fairly good warchest compared to the amount Syquest has available. (If this is a general tech slowdown what will Syquest's quarter be -- $25 million sales $40 million loss?)

Yes this stock has risk and is not for the faint of heart. I have followed this stock since january of last year. Short as well as long. The profit from here is not by being short. IMO.
