Of course, Dvorak is pretty blind to his arguments (not uncommon).

DSL will be (eventually) deployed in the local loop, where the ability to offer cheap long distance is the POINT. And he seems clueless to any of the more realistic technical reasons that ADSL will still be slow to deploy. And while his whine to cable telephony is understandable, anyone tuned into that space knows explosions in that direction are anticipated:

ie., reported on DJ today, from this week's ML Telecom conference, AT&T CEO Michael Armstrong:

"...The company, which is based in New York, would consider pairing with cable companies to offer local service, Armstrong said. However, that can't occur until the cable companies update their networks.

"I can't afford to do that for them," he said.

Armstrong said he believes the cable companies are serious about making the necessary improvements. He declined to say when the company foresees partnerships or how much it might spend on them..."
