COMPAQ 1621 LAPTOP WITH K6 233 IS A HOT SELLER AND SO IS THE K6 SUB $1000 PC'S
Clearly a winner The Compaq 1621 laptop with K6 233 is the very best of the high end laptops right now, Intel seems not to have anything to be able to compete with it in the high end laptop market right now and probably for some time to come. Can not wait to see a laptop with the K6 266 in it!
It was not easy but here is some information from COMPUSA as from the start of this month until today 3-17-98 on system sales, from my local area only.
Comparable laptops Compaq 1621 K6 233 sold 15 units price $2299,
Toshiba 315cds Pentium 200MMX sold 6 units price $2199,
Sony laptop PCG-717c Pentium 200MMX sold 3 units price $2299,
Toshiba laptop 315cdt pentium 200MMX sold 4 units price $2599,
And we know the K6 is more like the Pentium II then the Pentium MMX so I believe AMD has a clear advantage in the laptop market right now maybe the compaq laptop I mentioned above with the K6 233 will force other laptop makers to use the K6 too so they will stop loosing out on the sales.
Here is a little info on the regular desk top computers,
Compaq 2240 K6 200 sold 38 units price $799,
Compaq 2200 Cyrix media GX 180 sold 9 units price $599
Compaq 4508 Pentium 200 MMX sold 9 units price $899
IBM k6 233 sold 27 units price $999
IBM k6 266 sold 2 units price $1499
I got the info from a salesman, It seem customers are buying more on price then the name brand for equivalent speeds.
I also saw the IDT winchip at Price Club running at 200 Megahertz selling for $899 I believe with monitor but I'm not sure, I tried it it seemed to run windows 95 very fast.
Good luck; Joe

Pravin, re:<What's your take on the MXi?>

For summary of its features see techstocks.com

The first one to market with a chip with built in L2 cache will make a killing if yields are good. The chips in that race are the K6+3D, the Intel Mendocino and the IDT (Centaur) C7. According to tomshardware.com, the schedule for Intel is 4Q'98 and I believe AMD is trying for 3Q'98. Centaur I don't know.

The MXi does not have integrated L2 cache but instead concentrates on higher performance via 128 bit bus and other features. It more closely resembles Intel's "Katmai" and AMD's K7. If they can get this thing done by the end of '98 they will probably beat AMD and Intel in the high end market. It will be difficult for NSM to move from the $1K PC to the $2K PC market, but, if they clone Intel's 128 bit bus (which will replace SLOT 1), they can probably get 20% of it.
