For those of you who haven't seen it, here's Lehman's recent report on IRDF. The report addresses some of the issues raised on this thread, so I thought it was worth passing along. Looks like the handset price is still 2000-3000 grand a pop, for example.

<Globalstar really has got few problems compared with Iridium which has the biggest one of all - a pricing problem. They will have an even worse problem that Globalstar - when Iridium is full, nobody anywhere in the world will be able to connect. Now that will be a problem. At least Globalstar will only be full on a single satellite [or two].>

This is ironic! If Iridium is full ,then they are making tonnes of money, where's the problem? Seriously, though, your analysis of the impacts of being "full" and what exactly being "full" is isn't exactly right. For instance, Iridium will have ground stations, just like Globalstar, and so if it reaches capacity in a certain region, that won't necessarily affect others.

As to the "pricing problem" I fully believe that Iridium will operate at the premium price level for about 2 or maybe 3 years, and then lower their prices. In fact, I expect they will lower them to the level of Globalstar... This could create a situation where they pull way out ahead.

Not knocking globalstar, just saying its not a "done deal."
