Peter --

Most of the global news reveals the effects of deregulation in Europe which means telcos will be upgrading in order to compete. The more we see deregulation the more we'll see change and massive spending. NN has a huge presence outside the US and this can only be positive.

Just my take.

Peter, I note your post " you are about to pounce on NN ". 2 questions and few comments:
Why are you getting in now instead of earlier? Just being curious, that's all. 2nd, why do you want to get in now? Again, just my natural curiosity.
As far as how telecom news and the Internet will affect NN I think this article provides some insights:

techweb.com
techweb.com

I quote and comment:

 *"Internet bandwidth demands, fueled by technology such as video and IP telephony, are rising so rapidly that backbone providers may not be able to keep up, a panel of ISPs and equipment vendors said Friday at Spring Internet World '98 in Los Angeles "
Comment: Good for NN..

 *" the Internet used to double in size once a year, but now it's doubling every three to six months -- a
tenfold increase per year. "
Comment: Hold on to your NN stock!!

 *" We have to radically alter our backbone very, very regularly,"
Comment: You buy scalable ( NN ) equipment.

* "And new applications such as video have significant impact on existing infrastructure. "As new applications come along, it [the Internet] is gonna break. So we scramble like crazy to try to fix it," said Jeanette Symons, founder and chief technology officer of Ascend Communications, in Alameda, Calif."
Comment : What you do to avoid breaks is buy more reliable ( NN !! ) equipment.

* "Internet users have come to expect that Internet services are "free" after the user has paid infrastructure costs, but the panelists said the business model won't hold up as specialized services such as IP telephony put extra demand on the network. "Eventually, people will have to pay," Symons said. "If they're investing in their infrastructure, the money for that has to come from somewhere." What still has to be determined is whether users have to pay for the service, for time, or for distance."
Comment: When people start to have to pay for infrastructure to get on the web, it will be easier to pass
on higher costs of getting ATM backbone from NN.

* The ISPs on the panel said the cost of building a "long-haul" nationwide backbone, as opposed to short- distance segments, is so high that providers may be forced to move to a telephone company-inspired distance pricing system. "Distance-sensitive pricing may reemerge," Uunet's Taffel said.
Comment: Telcos may have a pricing advantage in this since they
have the connecting infrastructures (lines ) and have
been pricing things longer.Telcos buy NN : Advantage NN.

Good luck on your NN purchase.I am still holding mine. Market has been up last several sessions last 1 week.It is entitled to take a breather,
