I think you have identified the key reason for IBM participating in a bidding war

for Novell someday. As I said many many posts ago, when Novell has a Java server that can show performance for JAVA apps that is clearly superior to anything on an Intel box from anyone else and when Novell has Netware 5.0 with native IP stable, then it becomes a takeover candidate.

When it has a product and an edge in a growth market.

That is the key.

But the obstacles are many. Certainly this BOD blew it with Frankenberg and has had no strategy for either keeping Novell independant or developing toward a high price merger/buyout.

Novell doesn't even have a COO. Its been nearly a year of Schmidt winging it.
