Steve
I have not seen kurlak's analysis around here recently. I thought intel investors love, trust and respect him. Well, below is one of his more recent comments.

Intel (INTC, $76 3/8, B-3-1-7): "We believe it is finally becoming obvious that because of falling prices and slower unit growth, PCs can no longer drive Intel's sales and earnings at an above average rate. Indeed, we estimate sales growth of less than 1% for Intel in 1998 and only 6-7% in 1999. The history of rising Intel ASPs appears to be over if PCs remain the company's only market."

Steve, re: "what is the biggest reason that people [buy] Intel.. is it not that they "know" Intel?.. i.e. brand awareness and consumer recognition?"

My take is that compatibility is first and foremost. Most people see the PC in its essence as just a record player. It is useless if it doesn't play the records - and all people want is for it to work when they load up their software - any software title - and not be pain for them. They just want it to work, now, and forever. They are afraid of obsolescence, complexity, lack of performance, orphan status - anything that says suggest that the next piece of software or hardware accessory won't work with their machine.

Everybody knows about Betamax . . .

People chose Intel because they feel this will most closely meet this need. The leader is the most likely to last. The leader will be the most widely support platform, the one on which the software is most likely to work for the longest period of time.

This said then folks will spend only what they can afford for it, or what it is worth to them.
