Barry,
Re -- IBM with ownership of the K-6 would be more trouble for Intel than any competitor to date.

Very unlikely. They tried that before. The only place they could use the K6 would be in their own systems, and IBM has about 9% of the market share. Nobody else would buy chips which compete with their own systems.

Furthermore its not clear if IBM can make the K6 any cheaper than Intel can (In fact I suspect it would be more expensive) in addition to the limitations of the K6, which will be hard pressed to operate at 300Mhz or better (the entry point by dec).

The only reason anyone would buy AMD is because of their Fabs, which can be re-tooled more easily than building their own. However given the excess number of Fabs (excess semi supply) this also seems unlikely unless its a fire sale.

Barry:

I disagree. IBM could've made a counter offer for Cyrix. I think Cyrix would have been the logical choice b/c they don't have a fab, they have/had the Media Gx, and the 6x86 MX. I was surprised that IBM let NSM take Cyrix. Even Nexgen (both IBM fab customers), IBM let AMD steal it away. I feel IBM makes very good money on their foundary agreements with IDTI, AMD, and NSM/Cyrx.

IBM's competitors would not buy chips from IBM b/c it helps IBM. One example is MWave. Aptiva's used it, but name another Tier 1/2 vendor which uses MWave?
