The answer is every case on its own merits. Most refractory assays are horseshit. Some are not. Selenium, Telluride, and some sulphide ores do give DIFFICULTY with fire assay. Some extremely fine grained ores give low assays as they are not released upon grinding and poorly collected by the silver-lead collection process which is physico-mechanical and statistical. Some careless methods in grinding of prereleased ores will lose evident gold. Many things CAN happen. I have seen RICH gold ores come back from labs with ZERO. BUT--->

But, a zero assay by fire is ALWAYS very questionable. The only way to verify that special methods find the gold that standard does not is for a reliable INDEPENDENT truthful witness to DUPLICATE the methodology exactly with ITS own reagants faithfully collected and VERIFY the results. All else is some kind of CON game and it's your guess which kind.
