What other 'Internet Messaging' services did you envision? I can think of many specialist niche services, but very few services with mass consumer appeal.

I would see it happening in two phases: first niche services, then broader ones.

A niche service would be anything text based and suitable for a small screen. This includes: email, usenet, bulletin boards, stock quotes, and some Web sites. Text is so low-bandwidth that connection speeds don't matter much. I used to spend all day on the Internet, before the advent of the Web, on a 9600bps modem reading scrolling text. You could also use your Q netphone as a kind of thin client, with your database of names, contacts, calendar, etc. stored on the server.

The second phase would see a gradual convergence between tailored content, i.e. content designed specifically for a small screen, and improving technology, such as denser LCD displays and higher connection speeds. Web designers assume 640x480+, which is why most pages wouldn't be suitable for a small device. But they could easily assume 320x240 if they wanted.

Before it was killed, the Newton MessagePad was capable of surfing the Web. Owners of MessagePads rave about them.
