Dom, Article...Intel beefs up i960 family...

March 18, 1998

Electronic Buyers' News via NewsEdge Corporation : Intel Corp. has added a 100-MHz device to its i960 Jx series of 32-bit RISC microcontrollers and is now offering the entire line in a miniature plastic BGA.

The i960 JT features a clock-tripled 33-MHz external bus and is socket- and code-compatible with the other microcontrollers in the Jx series, providing customers with better performance while preserving hardware design and software investments, said Sharon Steppe, product marketing manager at Intel in Chandler, Ariz.

"These new products are part of our continuing effort to address the special requirements of the high-performance embedded market segment," Steppe said. "We have kept the bus frequency of the new i960 JT processor below 40 MHz to ease system design and reduce cost while maintaining socket-compatible performance."

The i960 JT features 16 Kbytes of instruction cache and 4 Kbytes of data cache, four times the cache available with i960 Jx series controllers. More powerful processors and larger on-chip memory have become increasingly necessary to handle the larger code of applications such as imaging and networking, said Tom Franz, vice president and general manager at Intel's Embedded Microcomputer Division.

Intended applications for the device include inkjet printers, multifunction peripherals, remote-access equipment, and ADSL modems.

The controller's 15-mm x 15-mm mini-PBGA simplifies manufacturing and is optimized for high-density boards, Intel said. The clock-doubled 66-MHz i960 JT is also currently available in a mini-PBGA, and other members of the series will be added by June, Steppe said.

The series devices are also available in ceramic PGA and plastic QFP. The i960 JT is $35 in 10,000s for all packaging options.

Evaluation of the i960 JT is available on the Intel Remote Evaluation Facility. The REF also gives designers access to Intel C software-development tools, code compilers, and evaluation boards for the entire i960 product line.
