[pair/rok]

Hi shlomi

back to pair/rok..from the press release it appears that rok is working with pair for adsl only... which leaves the orctf/rok alliance for hdsl2 intact... no doubt you know much of this...

believe rok and pair are "competitors" in regards to hdsl silicon ... rok is reputedly the "world's leading supplier" of hdsl chipsets, but does not supply pair.. as pair has its own homegrown sparrow silicon ... i don't believe pair sells their sparrow hdsl silicon to others...

some history here including orctf... back through brooktree which rok acquired in 96...

one of the classics/ a good read:
Old article from EE Times
November 13, 1995
exchange2000.com

.. seems that there was a falling out between pair and brooktree at some point along the way... if Geoff Hollingsworth is around, maybe he can explain what went on... in any case, apparently orctf continued working with brooktree and then rok ...behind the scenes.. until last fall's announcement of the rok/orctf alliance for hdsl2 silicon...when they went public...

as far as adsl goes...sounds like rok is playing dmt catchup... was looking there like they were not going to be in a position to deliver a standard's compliant product for a while... not so great a position strategically for "the consumer modem chipset market leader"... by licensing from pair, it looks like they're in the game...

only time will tell how the pair adsl silicon will compare to the orctf/fujitsu adsl silicon... am inclined to give the edge to orctf, but then i'm probably biased...

sounds like orctf/fujitsu silicon will be more integrated and thus might have the edge in price/performance... for example, pair's analog front end (harris) has two components besides transciever and pair has not mentioned line driver or interface/framer..., which could well be required components for pair's fully functional adsl modem... orctf/fujitsu is attempting to integrate these all into one chip... hope they pull it off... on schedule...

cautiously optimistic for cebit.. and agree that adsl over isdn might be important...

best wishes
s
