Snow covers Jordan
AMMAN, March 18 (UPI) Jordanians woke up to a startling sight
_ snow!

The snow closed off roads, schools, as well as government and
private institutions in Amman.

The Civil Defense Department said this is the first time in almost 50
years it has snowed heavily at this time of year.

The department said about 25 cms (nearly 10 inches) of snow had
piled up in most parts of Amman as a result of a polar depression
that began affecting the country and other parts of the region late
Tuesday.

The CDD advised people not to venture out of their homes today
and Thursday, when snow is expected to continue falling at
intervals until the early hours of Friday.

The department warned residents in low areas to prepare for flash
floods.

The Jordan Meteorology Department Tuesday predicted cold
weather and rain for today.

Gas station owners said they received hundreds of phone calls
from people seeking fuel for their home heaters.

Dozens of people lined up outside bakeries to stock up on bread.
