To all, From InfoWeek's daily posting of top stories - ___ADP To Spend $100M On Digital Alpha Servers___ Not everyone is worried about the viability of the Alpha chip. Automatic Data Processing Inc. said yesterday that its Dealer Services Group unit will shell out $100 million for several thousand Unix-based Digital Equipment AlphaServers and related services under a multiyear contract. The ADP group is buying the servers to support more than 18,000 car dealers worldwide. The system will speed processing of monthly sales reports, schedules, accounting, inventory, customer service, factory communications, and other processes. Dealers will be able to calculate vehicle purchase prices on the fly, track monthly payments or lease options, and locate parts from remote locations. Laurie McCabe, an analyst with Summit Strategies in Boston, says ADP's choice of Alpha isn't "crazy," even with Alpha viability questions surrounding Compaq Computer's pending acquisition of Digital. "They're sizing up the platform and realizing that this is the best system for their needs," McCabe says. "There's a large installed base out there, and nothing will happen to pull the rug out from everyone." -- Martin J. Garvey John
